Masked Lovebird

A beautiful bird with clear bright coloration, the Masked Lovebird also referred to as the Black Masked Lovebird, makes every bit as good a pet as the Peach-faced Lovebird. Some even suggest that they may be a bit calmer, though others say they are just as mischievous. Either way, they will make a delightful and enjoyable addition to any household.


This small parrot is an excellent beginners bird being relatively hardy, easy to care for, a willing breeder, and reasonably priced. It is a most playful, intelligent, and amusing little companion.

The Masked Lovebird is very social and loves companionship. Their natural behavior is to live closely with a companion so are often kept with another lovebird. Though they make a very fine and affectionate pet when hand-raised, they will need a lot of attention if kept singly. Most are kept in pairs to satisfy their considerable need for constant companionship, mutual preening, and socialization.

Scientific Name: Agapornis personata personata There are a some popular color mutations of the Masked Lovebird, and while this bird is described by its face, the 'mask', the mutations are described by their body color. The most common varieties are the Blue Masked Lovebird and the Green Masked Lovebird; and then there are the more uncommon varieties such as the medium blue (cobalt) and the dark blue (slate).

Distribution: The Masked Lovebird is native to northeastern Tanzania in Africa. They inhabit dry areas with shrubs or trees bordering forests, usually near bodies of water. They were originally discovered in the late 1800's but were not imported until the 1920's.

Description: The Masked Lovebird is a very small member of the parrot family. They have a general green plumage. The head is brownish-black with a yellow collar around the neck. The throat and upper breast is also yellow, though with a reddish-orange cast. The feathers of the rump and onto the upper tail are bluish, and the tail also has occasional orange and black markings. The eye is dark brown surrounded by a naked white eye ring. The beak is red and the legs are gray. The females in this species are slightly larger than the males. The young are duller especially on the head and they have black markings on the beak. The Masked Lovebird belongs to a group of lovebirds called the 'eye-ring' species. There are four eye-ring species, with the other three being the Fischer's Lovebird A. p. fischeri, Black-cheeked Lovebird A. p. nigrigenis, and the Nyasa Lovebird A. p. lilianae. This group can be identified by the obvious strong ring around their eyes. They are closely related and will interbred readily if kept together, even though they are different species. It is strongly urged that you keep these species separate to maintain their natural forms, as breeding within each species itself produces the most beautiful color mutations.

Size - Weight: The Masked Lovebird will get up to about 6" (14.5 - 15. 5 cm) in length.

Lovebird breeding

Yesterday I got good tips informartion about lovebird breeding from my friend. And now I want to write down here what my friend said. I hope it can help for those of you who want to breed Lovebirds.Most species of Lovebirds are relatively easy to breed. It's an enjoyable site to see these lovebirds hatch and then quickly grow to size.

Before breeding your Lovebirds make sure they are in top condition and not substantially feed, and also they should be living in a clean cage. Pellets and seed mix do not really compensate enough nutrition to your Lovebirds, it’s the fresh fruits and vegetables that keep them healthy to enable them to fertile eggs and raise strong offspring.



One of most important thongs is to make sure you have a right couple. Lovebirds gender can’t be easily identified that sometimes make Lovebird breeding not an easy task. This can be remedied by DNA testing, though that will require a costly proliferation for your Lovebirds, it’s the surest, best way. This will cost you the kit for getting a sample and for testing it to the lab. There are some visual differences you can see between the sexes, though other owner would say you can also see them in the opposite sex.

There are two different breeding techniques, first, is in large aviary groups or individual pairs in different cages. If you want to control the color mutation of your Lovebirds, you may want to choose the latter method. Also you can breed indoors, though there are some important things you might want to add in your Lovebird breeding list if you want to take this option. First, the amount of sunlight the birds will be exposed during the day. You can provide special lights for this purpose.

Make sure you have plenty of space for your Lovebirds breeding. They should be able to flap their wings and not hitting something, you have to make sure they can play and climb for exercise. If you do not have enough room, Lovebird breeding is not recommended. It will not be good for your pets.

Another option is using a nestbox. It can give best results, it allows interaction between the hen and the cock, while the hen is nesting. Humidity has an important role in the successful hatching of the eggs. Also you have to bear in mind and add to your Lovebird breeding list that you have to constantly provide a nesting material, to keep the nest fresh and keep the humidity level. Just make sure these are not poisonous to your Lovebirds.

Nutrition determines the health of your Lovebird breeding pairs and their young. Foods must be generally, fresh fruits and vegetables. There are some circumstances that an egg doesn’t hatch. This is natural if there are other eggs that have hatch in that particular group of eggs, for they may haven’t nested well, and didn’t have a lot of warmth from the hen. This is a natural occurrence, there are eggs not meant to hatch. Make sure you are well informed on Lovebird breeding before taking any step.
